Breast Augmentation & Implants – South Brisbane
Creating natural-looking and more appealing breasts requires a keen eye for detail. Gone are the days of using the same breast implants for every woman’s operation. We are in the era of precise breast shaping aided by cutting edge technology and this requires a higher level of cosmetic skill, dedication and a vast experience in the field.
For some women, their once fuller breasts can change after weight fluctuations or after breastfeeding and pregnancy. Well-performed breast augmentation with appropriate and safe implants can restore balance to overall body shape. Most patients think that breast augmentation is a simple procedure. In fact it is just the opposite. To achieve optimal results requires intensive training and experience. Our team of highly qualified surgeons and registered nurses will guide you through the entire process until you achieve your desired breast shape and size.
Because no two breasts are the same, even in the same patient, our surgeons use a bio-dimensional approach to choose the right breast implants that best suit our patient’s body frame. This makes the outcome of the surgery more natural-looking and in proportion to the body.
What breast implant type suits me best?
The breast implant type and technique that your surgeon will recommend will vary depending on your existing breast size and shape, general body shape and lifestyle factors. There are several approved suppliers of breast implants and each of them has a round or teardrop shape option. Your surgeon will guide you in choosing the right style, shape and texture of breast implants to ensure a faster and more comfortable recover, and to achieve your desired breast appearance.
What will happen during the procedure?
The operation can be performed in one of our tertiary hospitals or accredited day surgery centers which are equipped with the latest technology in providing general anesthesia, imaging and surgical techniques. After you fully understand the risks and how the procedure will be done, you will be put to sleep using general anesthesia. The surgeon will then create a small incision through the skin and then lift the tissue of the breast to make a pocket for the implant. The incision will be closed using absorbable sutures to eliminate the need for removal. Sterile dressings will be placed over the surgical wound and you will be required to wear a support bra or garment to avoid unnecessary movements that may reopen the wound.
Which incision technique will be used?
The patient decides where the incision will be created. It can be done under the natural fold of the breast, around the nipple or in the armpit. All of these options may hide the scar but how the scar will appear will depend on your skin type and color.
What will I expect after the procedure?
There will be some pain requiring mild analgesics for 3 to 5 days; swelling, bruising and discomfort may lasts up to 4 weeks. After this time, your breasts will feel softer and its final appearance can be visible. Most patients find the breast appearance continues to improve over time.
Aside from expected outcomes, you should be alert for abnormal symptoms associated with the surgery as this can be related to infection or improper placement of the implant. Unexpected symptoms include hardening of the breasts, asymmetrical breasts and visible edge of the implant. If this happens, you will be required to undergo a secondary surgery to replace or remove the implants. Wound healing can be delayed if the patient places pressure on the surgical area within the first 3 weeks. As much as possible, get a complete bed rest to avoid other untoward reactions such as bleeding, increasing pain and sensation changes in the breasts.
Each breast implant supplier has their own guarantee and all of these will be discussed during the initial consultation. Undesirable outcomes after the surgery is the least you will expect. But all of these can be prevented through the hands of our experienced surgeons and state-of-the-art medical facilities.
What other health issues are associated with breast implants?
Breast implant surgery is a very safe procedure. It has shown no associated increase in the incidence of cancer and it will not hinder the result of mammograms. However, capsular contracture or hardening of the breast tissues can develop if the content of the implant leaks into the surrounding breast tissues. It is advisable that you consult with your doctor and learn proper ways of self-examining your breasts to look for signs and symptoms of breast cancer and other medical condition that may affect the outcome of the procedure. It is best that you are able to determine your breast implant from your natural tissue with greater accuracy and clarity.
