Breast Augmentation & Implants – Hawthorne

The decision to have breast augmentation is extremely personal and you will have to decide if the benefits outweigh the risks and will achieve your goals. Under the hands of a qualified and certified surgeon, you are certain that the outcome of the procedure will go according to your plan.

The consultation process

The outcome of your breast augmentation procedure will greatly depend on what you and your surgeon have discussed during the initial consultation. Our surgeons believe that in order to reduce the risks involved with the procedure, a thorough assessment must be conducted. You will be asked regarding the following:

  • Your medical history – it is of great importance to determine if you have medical conditions such as clotting disorders, heart problems and hypertension in order to avoid complications.
  • Lifestyle – if you are a smoker, you may be required to stop it a few weeks prior to the procedure as it can delay healing.
  • Current medications – if you are on drugs like Aspirin, this can increase your risk to bleeding which may be contraindicated with the procedure.
  • Expectations about the surgery – realistic expectations about the procedure can give your surgeon a glimpse of how you want your breasts to look like.

You will be asked to sign consent forms and other papers to ensure that you fully understand the procedure along with its risks and possible complications.

What are the risks involved?

Like any other surgery, breast augmentation has its risks. These include the following:

  • Allergic reaction to anesthesia and other medications used before, during or after the operation.
  • Bleeding or hemorrhage
  • Faulty location of the implant
  • Fluid accumulation (seroma)
  • Formation of tight scar tissue around the breast implant known as capsular contracture
  • Increasing pain
  • Infection
  • Leakage or rupture of the implant
  • Possibility of another surgery to replace or remove implants
  • Severe scarring of the surgical area
  • Wrinkling of the skin over the implant or palpable implant

These risks and other information you should know will be fully discussed before you sign any papers. It is advised that you address all your questions directly to your surgeon during the consultation process.

How safe are breast implants?

Inserting implants inside your breasts does not impair breast health. Careful reviews of scientific research by independent groups found no link between the use of breast implants and other systemic diseases. In addition to this, your surgery will be performed by our hand-picked surgeons who have vast experience in the field so you are assured that you are in safe hands.

What are other important considerations with regards to the procedure?

Breast implants of any type are not guaranteed to last a lifetime. You may be required to undergo another surgery to replace your old implants or you can have it removed if you want to. The final shape of your breasts can be influenced by pregnancy, weight fluctuations and menopause. Breast augmentation requires regular breast examinations by your surgeon to evaluate the integrity of your implants.

What happens during the procedure?

Pain medications and anesthetic are administered for your comfort during the procedure. Your doctor will recommend the best choice for you. Incisions are made in well-concealed areas to minimize visible scars. The incision technique to be used will be discussed during the consultation. Incisions vary based on the implant type, your body anatomy, and preference of the patient and surgeon. After the incision is made, your surgeon will insert the implant into a pocket either under or over the pectoral muscle. Proper placement of the implant will be determined before your surgeon closes the incision with absorbable sutures.

The results are immediately visible. Final results will be visible after the swelling has fully subsided. You may be required to wear support bra while recovering to avoid unnecessary movements which may place pressure on the breasts.

Choose a surgeon you can trust

Because breast augmentation involves many choices, the first and considered as the most important part is choosing a member of Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons or those who are FRACS-certified. By doing so, you can be assured that you are choosing a qualified surgeon for the procedure.

How much will I need to pay?

You will not think about how much you spent for the procedure after you saw the results. But in general, average costs depend on the surgeon’s fee (the more his or her experience, the more expensive), hospital fees, type of breast implant, anesthesia, and other factors. Medicare and other private health insurances will not cover costs involve with the procedure as it is considered as a cosmetic surgery.
