Breast augmentation surgery or also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure used to enhance breast volume and improve their symmetry using implants. It is also aimed to restore lost breast volume after pregnancy, weight fluctuations, surgery such as removal of the breasts (mastectomy), or breastfeeding. In addition, this can boost and enhance self-image of the patient.
Breast implants are not designed to last a lifetime but it can last for 10 to 15 years. After this time, another surgery is needed to replace the implants or to have it removed if desired by the patient. Complications can occur such as painful scar tissue and leaking of the implants; therefore, women may need removal of the implants.
Most women become interested in the procedure when they have asymmetrical or sagging of the breasts as a result of age and other factors while others are just not comfortable with their underdeveloped breasts. In general, women who are in good overall health are ideal candidates for the procedure. Also, they must be non-smoker, no history of hypertension and clotting disorders, and must have realistic expectations about the procedure.
Breast implants may come in various size, shape, texture and projection. Saline breast implants are available to women 18 years old and above while silicone implants are for women over the age of 22. Our plastic and reconstructive surgeons can help you determine whether you are a good fit for the procedure. You can look at our breast augmentation before and after photos for your reference.
You and your surgeon can choose from the following breast implants during the consultation:
Saline breast implants – they are filled with sterile saline water or salt water. If ever the implant shell leaks, the saline will be naturally expelled by the body.
Silicone breast implants – these implants contained silicone gel. If the implant leaks, the gel will remain inside the implant shell.
Gummy bear breast implants/Form-stable implants – they maintain their shape even when the implant shell breaks. They have a thicker silicone gel than the traditional silicone implants.
Round breast implants – they have an advantage over other implants as they can make the breasts appear fuller and can achieve even more projection.
Smooth breast implants – as their name implies, they give the softest feeling and they can move with the breast implant pocket.
Textured breast implants – these implants offer advantage in reducing the risk of a tight scar capsule.
Whatever implant you choose, it is important to regularly monitor your breast implants and follow-up with your surgeon to avoid untoward reactions.
Usually, there are different types of incision to choose from. They are the following:
Inframammary incision – the incision is created under the natural crease of the breast.
Periareolar technique – the incision is created around the edge of the areola.
Transaxillary – the incision is created in the armpits.
Transumbilical breast augmentation (TUBA) – the incision is created in the belly button.
Our team of experienced and FRACS-certified surgeons will advise you on the best surgical incision that may conceal your scars.
