You need to sign a written consent and other paper works prior to the procedure. After all of these are settled, you will be brought to the operating room and will be put to sleep using general anesthesia. You surgeon will create an incision on your breasts for the implants to be placed. Adjustments will be made until the implants are properly inserted into the breast pockets and proper placement is verified. The surgical wound will be now closed using absorbable sutures and sterile dressings will be placed to protect it. After the operation, you will be brought to the recovery room for observation. It is recommended that you arrange with someone to watch over you prior to the procedure.

Your surgeon may place two surgical drains on your newly operated breasts to remove and prevent accumulation of body fluids in the surgical wound. Your breasts may be swollen, bruised and painful, but all of these are expected outcomes. After a day or two, the surgical drains will be removed. You will be required to wear a support bra or specialized garments to prevent unnecessary movements that may reopen the surgical wound. Discomforts are usually mild and can be managed by pain medications.

A complete bed rest is usually required to promote healing. Physical activities especially those that require heavy lifting or those that needs lifting the hand above the head are prohibited for about 4 weeks. You need to follow-up with your surgeon a week after the surgery or in your most available time.

While recovering at home, it is important to always monitor your newly operated breasts for abnormal signs and symptoms which can impair the outcome of the surgery. These include the following:

• Increasing breast pain

• Breast sensation changes

• Hardening of the breasts

• Pus draining in the wound

• Fever

• Difficulty of breathing, coughing and skin itchiness (signs of allergic reaction to anesthesia)

• Visible or palpable implants

• Irregular breast size and shape

Our surgeons and registered nurses will also advise you to adhere to the following post-operative instructions for speedy recovery:

• Increase protein intake.

• Take prescribed medications on time.

• Perform breast massage as prescribed.

• Wear support bra as prescribed.

• Consult immediately with your doctor for any abnormal signs and symptoms.

Having breast implants does not increase one’s risk for breast cancer. However, strict monitoring of the breasts is recommended to determine implant rupture or any other abnormal outcome. Also, having breast implants does not affect your ability to breastfeed your child. If you will undergo a mammogram, you may be required to repeat it for accurate results as the implants can affect the procedure.
