In general, you are a good fit for breast augmentation procedure if:

• You have asymmetrical, sagging, or underdeveloped breasts caused by several factors such as pregnancy, ageing, breastfeeding, and weight fluctuations.

• You are not contented with the size of your breasts and want to have fuller, round breasts.

• You are in good overall health and have realistic expectations about the procedure.

• You don’t have any clotting problems, cardiovascular disorders, or high blood pressure.

• You are not allergic to any anesthesia.

• You want to restore the volume of your breasts after you had undergone removal of the breasts (radical mastectomy) for breast cancer.

It is very important that you be very thorough when providing your medical history to prevent any complications that may alter the outcome of the procedure. Breast implants come in many different size and shape, and they may be placed through different incisions. Once you have decided to undergo breast augmentation, your surgeon will help you decide on the location of your implant, its type and size, texture, and incision techniques.

After you have signed an informed consent and all other paper works are completed, breast augmentation will now commence. You will be put to sleep using general anesthesia. Some surgeons will inject local anesthetic into your breasts to further reduce discomforts after the procedure. The surgeon will now create a small incision under the breast crease, around the areola or in the armpit – all of the incision techniques will be discussed during the consultation. The desired breast implant will now be inserted and its placement will be verified. After a few adjustments and your surgeon had finally determined correct implant placement, the surgical wound will now be closed using absorbable sutures. You will be observed for the first 24 hours and you may need a watcher during this time. If no complications are observed, your surgeon will discharge you after a day or two.

While at home, you must be alert for untoward signs and symptoms such as increasing pain, bleeding, pus, breast sensation changes, asymmetry of the breasts, fever, and visible or palpable implants. It best to avoid activities that require heavy lifting as this can reopen the wound. Follow your doctor’s advice regarding proper wound care and when to return for follow-up.
