BREAST AUGMENTATION & IMPLANTS

KEW

Breast augmentation, or breast enlargement, is a surgical procedure performed to make the breasts fuller and more appealing. The majority of women who undergo breast augmentation at one of our state-of-the-art medical facilities successfully achieve an improved appearance, an increase in self-regard, and an improved self-image. Schedule a consultation with one of our top tier and individually hand-picked plastic surgeons to receive a medical assessment and discuss your surgical options.

TYPES OF

BREAST IMPLANTS

Manufacturers of breast implants provide the market with different sizes, shapes, and projections to accommodate women with different body types and cosmetic goals. Today, round implants with a smooth surface are used for the majority of the procedures, though some women prefer anatomical or contoured implants with a textured surface. Both saline and silicone gel implants are made with a rubber shell. Saline implants are inserted empty into the breast pocket and then filled with a sterile salt water at the time of surgery. Silicone gel implants contain a cohesive, gelatin-like substance. If you decide to proceed with breast augmentation, you will work closely with your surgeon and a team of medical staff to finalize your implant type to meet your goals.

HOW BREAST AUGMENTATION

IS PERFORMED

Prior to the procedure, the location and technique of surgical incision will be discussed to you. Also, you will be required to sign a written consent because it is an invasive surgery. After all the paper works are settled, you will now be brought to the operating room. The surgeon will now sterile your breasts with antiseptic solution to prevent infection. Your surgeon will now create an incision using sterile surgical blade and will create a pocket for the implants after the general anesthesia has taken effect. Breast implants can be inserted in the natural crease of the breast, in the armpit or in an incision created around the areola. The two most common locations for the incision are in the breast crease and around the nipple. The desired implant is inserted either over, partially under, or completely under the muscles of the chest (pectoralis muscle). After proper placement of implants is verified, the surgeon will now close the incision using absorbable sutures. Sterile dressings will be applied to protect the wound. The entire procedure normally takes less than 2 hours to finish.

BEST

CANDIDATES

The best candidates for the procedure are women who are in good overall health and want to enhance their breast appearance. Also, you must have realistic expectations about the procedure and do not have any clotting or bleeding problems as they can interfere with the outcome of the procedure. If you believe that you are a good fit for the procedure, our qualified plastic surgeon will evaluate your circumstances and explain all you need to know about the procedure.

RISKS

INVOLVED

Almost any kind of surgery has its risks. In general, patients can experience infection, pain, and an adverse reaction to anesthesia characterized by difficulty of breathing, rashes and changes in mental status. There are also specific risks such as capsular contracture (hardening of the breasts), implant rupture, blood clots, changes in breast sensation, wrinkling/rippling, and interference with mammography. To minimize your risk of developing a complication, it is of utmost importance to carefully choose a qualified surgeon and follow his or her instructions before and after breast augmentation. In case of any symptoms that may necessitate professional management, contact your doctor immediately.

AFTERCARE INSTRUCTIONS

TO PREVENT COMPLICATIONS

When you get home following your breast augmentation surgery, you may need to do the following to prevent complications and other untoward symptoms:

  • Avoid lifting your hand over your head.

  • Avoid strenuous activities as it can reopen the surgical wound.

  • Clean your wound regularly and change dressings as instructed by your doctor.

  • Continue your antibiotics and pain medications per doctor’s advice.

  • High protein diet is advised for quick wound healing.

  • Make sure to return for follow-up to assess the progress of your wound healing and breast health.

  • Stop smoking as nicotine in cigarettes can delay healing and can affect blood circulation by constricting blood vessels.

The first 48 hours of the procedure is usually considered as the most critical. During this time, you are monitored for any untoward reactions. Having a watcher to stay with you is recommended.
